Coast defence ironclad. Ordered in 1875 as the breastwork monitor of Tempete class. Design was changed in 1878; Tonnant lost her breastwork, but get two 34-cm guns in two single barbettes, an thicker armored belt and deck. Comissioned in 1885, after rather uneventhful career (mostly spent in reserve) was struck from the list in 1902.

5091 t, 73.85 m, 17.72*5.636 m, 1 screw, 1 horizontal compound steam engine, 4 cylindrical boilers. Trials: 1994 ihp, 11.56 kts. Armour (iron) Belt 340-450 mm Deck 80 mm Barbettes: 340 mm Conning tower (steel) 30 mm Guns: 2 340/18 mle 1875, 4*37 mm revolver cannon
